Bobby Neil Owens
March 15, 1938 – June 18, 2020
Bobby Nell Owens, a Dutiful Soldier of God, known variously to family and friends as “Poppa” or just “Mr. Bobby,” peacefully gained his wings the morning of June 18, 2020. Bobby was born in Beaumont, Texas on March 15, 1938, one of the twins born to Nicholas Owens, Sr. & Celestine Hendricks Owens. At his passing, he was eighty-two years old; an extraordinary man and a true servant of our Lord and Savior.
Bobby was a proud graduate of the Class of 1956 of Charlton Pollard High School. He then started his career by joining the United States Army. He served 21 years as a member of the 82 nd Airborne division. “Drill Sargent Owens” was a decorated solider of the Vietnam War. He received several Army commendations medals including the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He retired in 1977. In 1978, Bobby began working for the United States Post Office. In his 21 years of civil service he served as a Carrier then transitioned to a Safety Instructor. During this time, he attended Lamar University. Hs kind spirit and open heart allowed him to support his family, friends, and church.
While stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina he met and married the love of his life, Martha Jean Taylor. Together they celebrated fifty-six wonderful years of marriage and from this union they had one daughter Catherine Denise Owens.
At an early age Bobby loved and served our Blessed Lord and Savior. He was one of the founding Deacons of Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church. As a devout Christian his strong beliefs were transparent with his leadership as well as principles. He always strived to be a steady rock for his church family and making himself always available.
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and siblings, Nicholas Owens, Jr., Melvin Owens, and Billy Nell Owens. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jean Owens, daughter, Catherine Batiste (Eric Adams); grandchildren, Charles Batiste & Cassandra Batiste; great-grandchildren, Charli Batiste & Camryn Wilson, and a host of many nieces and nephews.
